Reading Notes: Week 3, Part A

 Reading Notes:

- I'm familiar with a lot of these stories already. I didn't realize that they all came from Ovid's Metamorphoses!

- The story of Io and Jupiter was always the saddest to me:

  • Io is a beautiful young girl and Jupiter (Zeus) sees her and wants to have sex with her
  • He chases her down and rapes her, but he covers the land with fog so that his wife can't see
  • Jupiter's wife Juno suspects something, and comes down to earth...Jupiter turns Io into a cow to hide her
  • Juno asks for the cow as a gift and Jupiter has to give it to her or else it will look suspicious
  • Juno keeps Io the cow constantly on watch by a guard with 100s of eyes, who finds a way to visit her dad and tell him what happened by writing on the ground with her hoof
  • Jupiter sends Mercury to kill the guard so that he can set Io free
  • Juno sends a fury to torment Io, but Jupiter begs that Juno spare her and Io is returned to human form
